Judge Michael McNamara Joins Westland District Court

On November 5, 2024, Michael McNamara was elected without opposition to serve a six-year term as Judge of the 18th District Court of Westland, beginning January 1, 2025. 

A graduate of University of Detroit Mercy Law School (J.D., 1993) and Eastern Michigan University (B.S., Political Science), Judge McNamara began his career at one of Michigan’s largest trial firms. Since 2003, he served as Assistant Westland City Attorney and Prosecutor in the 18th District Court, representing the city and various municipal institutions—including the William P. Faust Public Library—for over two decades.

He is also admitted to practice before the Michigan Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit, and even the U.S. Supreme Court as of 2014—highlighting his extensive courtroom and appellate experience.

Judge McNamara’s dedication extends well beyond the bench. He’s deeply rooted in the Westland community—volunteering for events like Blues, Brews & BBQ and Relay for Life, serving on the Chamber of Commerce Board, mentoring through Westland Youth Assistance, and earning the “Spirit of Giving” Award in 2023.

He was officially sworn in during a public investiture ceremony held in June 2025, marking his formal transition to the judiciary
